Classifying Objects by Observable Properties

In Science we are observing gourds by their properties.  (Texture, size, shape, color and weight) Today we looks at the gourds and sorted them by size and color.  It was a little tricky because some of them were several colors.

Jael was able to defend her reason for sorting the gourds according to their color.  She decided that we needed another group because the gourd had 2 colors on it instead of just one.

Here we sorted them by shapes.  "Handles, circle shape, cucumber looking and chicken leg shape."  I don't think I could have come up with better words to describe them!

Math Night

Thank you to all the parents that were able to attend tonight's Math Curriculum Night!  Parent involvement is always important in help our student's become successful.  If you were not able to come tonight no worries!!  Let me tell you about what we went over-
Number Talks, Problem Solving and Math Games
Number talks are so important to all students Kindergarten- 5th grade because it helps them dig deeper into number sense and allows them to quickly identify numbers using different strategies.
Problem Solving has become a huge focus in the past few years for FISD.  We want student's to solve problems, but we also want them to be able to justify and defend their answer.  Some problems can be solved in various way, but which one it the best to use and when??  We help them solve problems and then verbally or pictorially justify their answer.
Math Games are games that are taught to the students in order to practice skills previously taught.  Math skills will spiral throughout the year and it helps the students to practice these skills in a fun way.
I know that I did not cover everything that was presented tonight, but it is a good start!
Tomorrow is picture day and Friday is our FUN RUN!!!
Have a wonderful night!
