Story Maps

This week in writing we are learning how to use a story map to organize our thoughts before writing our story.  We know that it is important to include: who, what, when and where in our story. This is something that we just started and will continue to work on over the year.  Everyone did a great job!

Star of the Week, a Birthday, and Frisco Fire Safety Clowns!!

This morning has already been jammed packed with fun!!
Ranvitia is our Star of the Week!   She displays honesty and integrity in everything that she does!  Way to go!!

Andrew celebrates his birthday today! Happy birthday Andrew!

The Frisco Fire Safety Clowns came to preform for k-5th today!!  They were so funny and taught us many lessons.  We should always wear our seat belts when in a car.  The back seat is the safest place for us to sit.

We should not get on the internet without our parents approval first.  The internet can be a fun place to visit but we need to be careful when using it.
Our parents should test the smoke and carbon dioxide detectors once a month to make sure they are operating correctly.
We should always be careful around water.  If we cannot swim we need to wear a life jacket and stay with an adult at all times.

Dog's On Campus

Parents-

Please see the below note from Mrs. Tobey.

Dogs on campus: Dogs are not allowed on FISD property while students are at school which includes
walking your student to or from school. If you are walking your child to school, or picking your child up
from school, we ask that you wait on the city sidewalks with your dog. If you are coming through carpool
and have your dog in the car, we ask that you leave your car windows rolled up until you leave the campus.

Part Part Whole

Today in math we learned a new strategy to solve addition problems.  We used a Part Part Whole mat to separate the two number and then moved them to the whole when we added them together.  It makes adding more visual for the students.

Good Morning Hosp

We have Good Morning Hosp every Friday morning in the cafe at 8:00.  We have so much fun saying the pledges, singing our school song, listening to upcoming events and a movement activity.  Some students may also receive a Solid Gold award.  This award is for those students that go above and beyond for others or Hosp.

Math

In math we are exploring place value and are learning where the tens and ones place is located in a two digit number up to 40.  We discussed that a number that is written as 32 is the standard form and the number written as 30+2=32 is the Expanded form.  The word Expanded was introduced to our class when we played Roll it! Make it! Write it!

After working on our math skills during math workshop we worked on solving a math problem.  We decided that there are several ways to solve our problem.
Sophia showed us how to make a number sentence to solve the problem.  She took the numbers out of the word problem and knew that she needed to subtract to find the answer.
Andrew showed us how to use a number line to solve the problem.  He knew that he needed to subtract in order to solve the word problem. Here he is drawing a number line in order to find the correct answer.

Both strategies are correct.  We like to share our strategies with our class so they can choose the best way to solve a given problem.

Writing About Bats

Yesterday we read an informational text on bats.  We learned so many facts about bats.  Then we put those facts on a tree map to help us organize our thoughts.  Today we took those facts and made them into complete sentences.  Our focus for the week is to write facts from an informational text that we have read. We want to organize our thoughts and write them in a complete sentence.  Each sentence needs to start with an uppercase letter and end with correct punctuation.  We also need to make sure we have finger spaces  between our words.
