Number Bonds

This week we are working on composing two digit numbers using a number bond mat. This helps us to visualize the number and easily recognize the tens and the ones place in the number.

Making Words, Fiction and Non Fiction, & Grouping objects

To help us review for our spelling test today, yesterday we practiced making words with magnetic letters.  We took the word like and noticed that we could make hike, tike, and pike.

We also noticed that we could make words that ended with an.  Can, man, fan...

In math we were able to take a set of objects and group them into groups of 2's, 5's and 10's to make them easier to count.

Something that we will continue to work on is deciding if a book is a Fiction or Non Fiction book.  We made an anchor chart and sort books from a catalog in our reading response journals.  This is something that we will work on more.  It can be confusing understand the differences.

No school on Monday!!  Enjoy the long weekend!!

Writing Workshop and Reading Workshop

Today in Writer's Workshop we worked hard on sketching out a picture, writing our words to match our picture and then going back to color our picture or add details.  We had so many friends volunteer to share their writing with us.

In Reader's Workshop we worked on building our stamina.  We are reading for EIGHT minutes at a time!!  You may think eight minutes is not a lot but it is when you have 24 boys and girls all reading at one time.  By the end of the year we will be reading for 45 minutes!!  Yeah us!!

Rekenreks, new math tubs and the library!!

Monday was a super busy day!! We composed numbers to 20 with rekenreks. We worked together as partners to find two addends that equal 10!!
After exploring with the rekenreks we moved on to new math tubs. We did an amazing job working with our small groups and completing the tasks.
I love Sarah's face in this picture!! She was so excited to fill her tens frame!

We started a new activity to help us become stronger writers. Each student has an idea notebook that they were given and they will bring pictures or memories  from a place or a special time. This notebook will travel with them until they are in fifth grade. We are hoping that this will help students remember special memories and be able to write about them. A note was sent home in their green folders today to help get them started.
We were able to visit the library for the first time!! We will go to the library on Mondays to check out new books. Mrs. Kumar taught us a lesson on taking care of our books. The students will be given a jumbo ziplock bag to keep their library safe in their backpacks. This is to help keep it clean and water free from a leaky water bottle.
